Anniversary of Pro-Veterans Legislation

Statement

Dr. Dan Benishek released the following statement regarding the one-year anniversary of his vote for H.R. 2433: "Veterans Opportunity to Work Act of 2011," which helps veterans with job training and placement:

"A year ago today I voted to make veterans a priority. The men and women in our armed services are heroes. However, nearly 1 million of our heroes are unemployed--this is unacceptable. That is why I voted to support the Veterans Opportunity to Work Act, because it helps our veterans get the job training they need. Our men and women in uniform have put their lives on the line for our country and freedom across the globe. When they return home they deserve to find a good job, it's the least we can do.

Unfortunately, the Democrat-controlled Senate has yet to act to pass this important piece of legislation. Our heroes deserve results, not partisan bickering.

As a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee I take great pride in legislation that helps our veterans. That is why I have introduced a legislative plan aimed at streamlining the Veterans Administration called "Break the Backlog." Currently, 66 percent of VA disability compensation claims are over 125 days old. Legislation like H.R. 2433 and "Break the Backlog," provide the kind of care that veterans here in Northern Michigan and across the country deserve. I look forward to supporting more pro-veterans legislation, because our veterans deserve the best treatment, care, and job training that America has to offer."
