Whitfield Statement on Today's Jobs Numbers

Statement

Date: Oct. 5, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield, (KY-01), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Energy and Power, released the following statement on today's jobs report.

"Today's report on the September jobs numbers is another example of how President Obama's economic policies have failed, and how he has not lived up to his promises of bringing unemployment to a rate of 5.6% or lower. Instead, while President Obama has failed to get Americans back to work, he has added $5 trillion to our Nation's debt, putting our overall financial health in jeopardy.

"Even though we saw a minor decrease in the unemployment rate (down from 8.1% to 7.8%), the broader rate of unemployed and underemployed remained steady at 14.7%. This nation cannot get the 23 million Americans who are either unemployed or underemployed back to work at this pace.

"While our national unemployment rate slightly decreased, Kentuckians are still hurting. In August, Kentucky's unemployment rate actually increased. This is not the sign of a thriving economy. People are still struggling, and the President needs to do more to ensure everyone who wants a job can find a job."
