Defense Department Energy Official Travels to Alaska with Sen. Begich

Statement

Date: Oct. 3, 2012
Issues: Energy

In my last newsletter, I mentioned that Assistant Secretary of Defense for Operational Energy Plans Programs Sharon Burke would visit Alaska. Last month, Sec. Burke and I visited Eielson, looking for ways to make it more energy efficient and therefore more competitive. We looked at Eielson's power plant and passive solar thermal heating wall. We also discussed ways to improve energy usage and efficiency.

While at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, we learned about new energy technologies Alaska researchers are developing for remote Alaska communities that could also be applied to military operations and training.
