Maloney Statement on Deaths of U.S. Diplomats in Libya

Statement

Date: Sept. 12, 2012
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Defense

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), issued the following statement on the death of four Americans in the Libyan Embassy last night, including Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and Foreign Service Officer Sean Smith:

"The deaths of U.S. diplomats in Libya, eleven years after 9/11, are a shocking reminder of the fragility of our world. Both the offensive video which brought on the attacks on our Libyan consulate and the attack itself are outrageous examples of what anarchy looks like.

"I travelled to Libya with Leader Pelosi in March and met with Consular staff in Benghazi. They worked tirelessly during the Libyan revolution and assisted mightily in that nation's transition to democracy. Americans are in their debt for their selfless service and our hearts go out to their families. We can honor their lives by redoubling our efforts to promote democracy throughout the world."
