Tierney Talks Job Creation with Local Business Leaders

Press Release

Date: Sept. 5, 2012
Location: Danvers, MA

Today, Congressman John Tierney addressed the members of the North Shore Chamber of Commerce at a breakfast event and shared his vision for building a stronger middle class. Tierney focused on his work in Congress to help create jobs, grow small businesses, and allow local entrepreneurs to thrive.

"We cannot have a robust economy without a strong middle class," said Congressman Tierney. "We must recommit ourselves to investing in our nation's future and putting people back to work immediately. That means creating well-paying American jobs here in Massachusetts through fixing our roads and bridges, investing in manufacturing, promoting job training programs and growing our businesses. With a skilled workforce, we will be ready to compete for the jobs of today and the jobs of the future."

Tierney expressed his support for making strategic investments in infrastructure projects, highlighted his work co-authoring the Green Jobs Act, and spoke about the importance of passing his Workforce Investment Act. He also pledged to continue his efforts to protect programs that are critical to the middle class, like Medicare and Social Security, and stated his strong opposition to the Republican Budget, authored by Paul Ryan, that will end Medicare as we know it and raise taxes on the middle class.

"Now is not the time to abandon our strong commitment to programs like Medicare and Social Security, and those that educate and train the middle class and people aspiring to it. We should be focusing on making responsible investments in our workers, not on giving tax breaks to companies that ship jobs overseas. I am committed to working with area small businesses, including those in attendance at the North Shore Chamber event today, to move our country forward," Tierney concluded.

Congressman Tierney voted for 17 small business tax cuts and one of the largest middle class tax cuts in history. Right now, these tax cuts are helping create jobs and allowing small businesses to expand. He supported landmark legislation to bring healthcare costs down for small businesses here in Massachusetts.
