Bono Mack Calls Latest U.S. Unemployment Figures Unacceptable; Urges White House to Change Course

Statement

Following today's disappointing unemployment figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade, released the following statement:

"Labor Day may be the traditional end of summer, but the U.S. economy continues to be scorched by bad news. Our staggering national debt has eclipsed a record $16 trillion; the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) said there was essentially zero growth last month in the small-business sector; and today we got a weaker-than-expected jobs report.

"What's more, tens of thousands of Americans gave up hope last month of finding a job and simply quit looking. This is totally unacceptable. Today's report underscores President Obama's failed economic policies. No matter how he tries to paint it, we've now had 43 straight months of unemployment above 8 percent -- the longest such stretch since the Great Depression. It's time for the President to begin seriously considering the 30-plus bills passed by the House which would remove barriers to job growth in America. If he won't listen to House Republicans, then he should listen to the 12.5 million Americans who are unemployed and the 23.1 million who are underemployed."
