Statement by Ron Barber on Democratic Primary Election for Arizona's 2nd Congressional District

Statement

Congressman Ron Barber issued the following statement regarding the primary election results in Arizona's 2nd Congressional District:

"It is an honor to be the Democratic nominee for Arizona's 2nd Congressional District. I am grateful to everyone who made phone calls, knocked on doors, talked to their neighbors, and voted.

"I am running for Congress because we need to rebuild our middle class. I will fight to keep taxes low for middle class families, protect Social Security and Medicare, and balance our budget the right way -- not on the backs of middle class families and seniors. I am committed to creating jobs by rebuilding our infrastructure, investing in education, and expanding the bioscience, high-tech, and solar industries in Southern Arizona.

"I respect Martha McSally's service to our country. But the policies she supports will not help rebuild the middle class or protect essential programs for seniors. She has said she would vote for the Paul Ryan budget plan that would make massive cuts in Medicare and could force seniors to pay $6,400 more for healthcare--out of their own pockets, every year--in order to give huge tax breaks to millionaires and Big Oil. She's pledged to keep tax breaks for corporations that ship American jobs overseas. And although an affordable college education is the best indicator of a young person's ability to get a good job, she supports ending the federal student loan program. Her plans will just make life harder for the middle class.

"I look forward to discussing these issues over the next 70 days, and to continuing to stand up for Southern Arizonans."
