Upendra Chivukula Calls for Common Sense Approach to Gun Laws; Calls on Congressman Lance to Support Tougher Gun Measures

In the wake of the national tragedy that took place in Aurora, Colorado, and Oak Creek, Wisconsin, a national discussion about gun laws has been spurred. Today, Democratic candidate for NJ-7 paid his respects to those affected saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families in Colorado and Wisconsin who have endured unimaginable tragedies."

During a meeting with voters in NJ-7th district, Chivukula was asked about his position in light of recent events. "We must ensure that when Congress legislates it takes a common sense approach and not ruled by special interests," said Chivukula.

According to Congressman Leonard Lance's campaign website, Congressman Lance boasts about having a "100 percent NRA voting record in Congress" and:

- opposes renewing the federal assault weapons ban

- voted to fully repeal the National Parks gun ban

- voted for H.R. 822, the "National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act."


- voted against funding national gun registry database

Chivukula, a former engineer at Bell Labs in the district, went on to say that he is not only a "problem solver" who could bring common sense solutions to Congress, but also a father and grandfather saying, "In Congress, I will support common sense solutions -- like renewing the Federal Assault Weapons ban. I will help bring sensible and reasoned way to keep our children safe from violence. And, I believe that Congressman Lance should do the same."
