Issue Position: Czars

Since taking office in January, President Obama has appointed as many as 34 czars to oversee and implement his agenda. At this rate, we will have 272 czars in Obama's first term, and 544 czars if he lasts two terms. By comparison, President Reagan had three czars over eight years. These czars are unelected, unaccountable executive branch officials whose powers are not subject to congressional oversight or Senate confirmation.

Congressman Marchant is fighting hard to expose President Obama's czars and demand executive branch transparency and accountability. The American people deserve no less.

Congressman Marchant cosponsored the Czar Reform and Accountability Act of 2009, which would prohibit funding of any czar who has not received Senate confirmation.

Congressman Marchant cosponsored the SAC Act, which would provide sunset dates for all czars and would require Senate confirmation for all czars.

Congressman Marchant cosponsored House Resolution 185, which calls for congressional oversight hearings on the czars and requires President to report to Congress on the responsibilities, authorities, and qualifications of the czars.
