Chairman King Statement on Webster Report Regarding Fort Hood Attack

Statement

Today, Rep. Peter T. King (R-NY), Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, issued the following statement in response to the FBI's release of an unclassified version of the "Final Report of the William H. Webster Commission on The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Counterterrorism Intelligence, and the Events at Fort Hood, Texas, on November 5, 2009":

"I appreciate Judge Webster's commitment and dedication in examining the FBI's actions and inaction leading up to the 2009 terrorist attack at Fort Hood. The report found serious lapses in the FBI's pre-attack investigation of Nidal Hasan, the Army major radicalized by Anwar al-Awlaki, then a leader of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). I have thoroughly reviewed the classified version of the report, which was delivered to me on Tuesday, and look forward to an in-depth briefing on the report. I am pleased that the FBI today released this unclassified version for public review.

"The report is a stark reminder that the domestic radicalization by al-Qaeda and its affiliates is a serious threat to the Homeland that absolutely must be addressed head-on by the Federal government without concern for political correctness.

"The report is a valuable follow-on to a prior report issued by Chairman Joe Lieberman and Ranking Member Susan Collins of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which joined the House Homeland Security Committee in December for a hearing examining the terrorist threat to and within military communities within the United States."
