Today, Congressman Mike Michaud announced that the Carmel Fire Department has been awarded an $87,325 Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Hiring Grant. SAFER grants provide assistance to fire departments and volunteer firefighter organizations to help maintain sufficient staffing levels.

"First responders are integral to keeping our communities safe and secure," said Michaud. "SAFER grants help to ensure that fire departments are adequately staffed as our communities face difficult financial decisions."

Last week, Michaud announced that the Ellsworth Fire Department had received a $234,476 SAFER hiring grant. In May, Michaud hosted workshops in Auburn, Bangor, and Presque Isle aimed at helping Maine fire departments work through the FEMA grant process.
