Since first elected eight years ago, Linda Harper Brown took on Austin lobbyists and special interests to get rid of useless, big-government projects. When the state faced a $10 billion budget shortfall in 2003, she took a hard look at the books, cut wasteful spending and balanced the budget without a tax increase.
