Issue Position: More Small Business

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

Kansas needs more small business and less government regulation. Small businesses are the heartbeat of Kansas towns. They provide the goods and services that people need to live healthy, productive and prosperous lives. Kansas needs small businesses to do more than survive; they must thrive.

Talk to any small business owner and he or she will tell you how difficult it is to operate a small business. In addition to managing the core business, small business owners are forced to spend an exorbitant amount of time, finances and emotional capital on unnecessary nonsense imposed upon them by excessive government. Rather than growing their business, small business owners become slaves to government regulation. Rather than leveraging their resources to expand their business, small business owners take on the job of legal liaison between their business and the government. That's not productive. That's not how we should treat smart risk-takers who add economic value to society.

Here's where government can play a role.

The Kansas legislature must reduce the unnecessary regulation of small business. Kansas can be a place where small businesses grow, and where people want to start new small businesses. In order for that to happen, government must back off and let people do their jobs.
