Carnahan Statement On Supreme Court SB 1070 Decision

Statement

Date: June 25, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Russ Carnahan (D-MO) today released a statement following the decision of the United States Supreme Court to strike down the majority of Arizona's SB 1070, with the exception of provisions allowing police officers to request the "papers" of anyone stopped for any reason.

"I completely agree with President Obama that the nature of this case and the provisions the Court have allowed to stand indicate a clear and present need for comprehensive immigration reform," said Carnahan. "We are too diverse a country, whose roots reach through immigration into the traditions of many other nations, to allow partisan politics and fear to determine who is allowed to live the American Dream. We must come together, as the voices of our constituents, to have a vibrant, honest and real conversation about how we move forward in a just and fair way, protecting all of our citizens and crafting immigration laws that better reflect the realities we face in a more global society."
