Donnelly Celebrates 40th Anniversary of Title IX

Today, Joe Donnelly, candidate for U.S. Senate, celebrated the 40th anniversary of Title IX and thanked its chief sponsor, former Indiana United States Senator Birch Bayh, for advocating for and defending the law which leveled the playing field for women in higher education and athletics.

"On the 40th anniversary of Title IX being signed into law, I especially thank one of Indiana's most esteemed public servants, Senator Birch Bayh, for his leadership in leveling the playing field for women in higher education and athletics," said Donnelly. "As the proud father and coach of a daughter who played sports throughout her childhood, I know how Title IX changed and continues to enrich many women's lives. We need to continue to advocate for increased opportunities for women, such as equal pay for equal work."

Title IX is part of the Education Amendments of 1972, signed into law on June 23, 1972. It states, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity." Senator Birch Bayh of Indiana introduced Title IX in the United States Senate and fought for its implementation once signed into law.
