Issues: Marriage

Marriage is a civil right and needs to be protected under the 14th amendment. To deny this fundamental freedom is directly subversive to the principle of equality at the heart of the Constitution.

Love, between two committed adults, cannot and should not be discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation. Our country has made great strides toward marriage equality but we must fight to ensure that we continue to move forward and not backward. I applaud President Obama in his personal support for marriage equality.

I will be an unrelenting advocate for marriage equality. Our State of Washington is at the forefront in the fight for equality; I will take that passion and utilize it at the national level. Once elected to Congress, I will submit a Constitutional amendment which declares marriage equality a civil right:

"The right of citizens of the United States to marry shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex, race, gender, or sexual orientation.

Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation."
