Issue Position: Protecting Our Environment

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

What is the value of our environment in Washington State?

I understand that our environment is one of the highest values of the citizens of Washington. We are blessed with Puget Sound, spectacular scenery, beautiful National and State parks, and clean air and water. These are priceless!

I have shown leadership as a city council member and mayor on this major issue, and as your State Representative I will fight to protect our environment in smart, sustainable ways.

As Mayor and Councilmember in Shoreline, I championed major actions to improve our environment, such as the Sustainability Strategy and natural drainage solutions for Aurora Avenue.

As former Shoreline Chamber President, I worked to promote Green Business programs such as the North King/Snohomish County Green Business Forum and the Shoreline Solar Fest. I am very proud under my leadership Shoreline's City Hall with our exemplary solar array became a showcase for green building technology and renewable energy.

As your representative, I will focus on cleaning up Puget Sound by making sure polluters pay their fair share of cleanup costs. I will make sure that stormwater management stays a top priority and support Open Space Restoration and Acquisitions for our District to improve water quality and create places for recreation. I will put my business experience and environmental leadership to work by funding green jobs training. I will work to ensure that sustainable, clean energy remains part of our heritage by opposing dirty coal plants and encouraging sustainable wind, water, and solar power.

I also know that environmental battles can be significant without being large. I will help make sure that our State laws reward environmental stewardship in our businesses and homes, and make sure those who abuse the environment pay the cleanup costs.

My environmental leadership and commitment to protecting our environment in a smart, business-friendly way has led to the endorsement of our campaign by the Washington Conservation Voters.
