Issue Position: Government Reform

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

To this day it is still difficult to make sense of what was involved with the Wall Street bailout. Even if it did help prevent a financial meltdown, the federal government was not straightforward and honest about what it was doing.

There have been proposals to make the state legislature a part-time body. Although I have no particular preference on whether it is a full-time or part-time body, I would suggest that scheduling be rearranged so that legislative members could voluntarily choose to take part-time roles with a lower salary (such as limiting votes to only specific days or specific times; members would not need to be present for all of the deliberations). This would reduce taxpayer costs since legislators who could make money elsewhere would do so.

Apparently the State of Michigan pays its legislators much more than most other states pay their legislators. Although I have not yet decided whether I will vote for compensation cuts (I would probably do it if other legislators are in favor of it), I will vote against increases in compensation for state lawmakers.

I will support legislation that extends the federal Do Not Call list to apply to political campaigns.
