Rep. Roybal-Allard Commends GSA Plan for a New Federal Building in Downtown Los Angeles Adjacent to New Federal Courthouse

Statement

Date: June 22, 2012
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Infrastructure

Today, Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard praised a new GSA proposal that would not only deliver the long planned federal courthouse, but also an adjoining new federal office building. This new federal building will alleviate current space issues, provide new job opportunities and will not require additional federal funds.

"I applaud GSA Acting Administrator Dan Tangherlini for finding an innovative, practical, and fiscally responsible solution to meet our judiciary and federal workspace needs in downtown LA," said Congresswoman Roybal-Allard. "I was glad to accompany Administrator Tangherlini on his recent inspection tour of the Spring Street courthouse and the Roybal Federal Building and show him the unsafe and deficient facilities the court and the public currently use. The Administrator's proposal will involve the exchange of the Spring Street courthouse for the construction of a new federal office building, and will save taxpayers more than $150 million over other proposals which called for the renovation of the aging Spring Street facility. This new plan will create even more construction jobs for our community and is a win, win, win for the courts, federal employees and the people of Southern California. I commend Administrator Tangherlini for his visionary leadership in charting this new course" added Roybal-Allard.

GSA is expected to move forward in the coming weeks with preparations for construction of the new courthouse, which will precede the construction of the new federal building.
