Congressman Rothman's Statement on the 40th Anniversary of Title IX

Statement

Date: June 25, 2012
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Women

Congressman Steve Rothman (NJ-9) released the following statement:

On June 23, we will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Title IX and the thousands of doors it has opened for the young women of America. Before the enactment of Title IX in 1972, many women were denied the opportunity to pursue opportunities at institutions of higher education simply because of their gender. By prohibiting exclusion based on sex at America's educational institutions, Title IX has created numerous opportunities for women, including quadrupling the amount of women taking part in college athletics and provided more than one million dollars in scholarships for women, which were virtually non- existent before 1972. I encourage all Americans to reflect on the real progress we have made with Title IX and to recommit to the goal of achieving full equality for every member of our society.
