Cicilline Brings Key Organizations Together to Help Seniors At Resources Fair in North Providence

Residents from cities and towns across Rhode Island's First District came to the Sal Mancini Senior Center tonight to attend U.S. Congressman David Cicilline's (D-RI) Senior Resources Fair and learn more about services available to them.

"One of my most important responsibilities as a Member of Congress is to provide effective constituent services for families across our district," said Cicilline. "Like the Housing Fair we held earlier this year, tonight's Senior Resources Fair helps cut through layers of red tape to bring Rhode Island residents together with the organizations that can provide them with vital assistance and services."

Cicilline's Senior Resources Fair attracted more than 20 area agencies and organizations, including the Rhode Island Division of Elderly Affairs, the Social Security Administration, and Rhode Island Housing. Participating organizations presented information on resources available to seniors, and Cicilline's constituent services staff was on hand to answer questions regarding casework services.

"Tonight's Senior Resources Fair was very successful in terms of connecting Rhode Islanders with organizations that can assist them," said Paula Totten, Clinical Nursing Supervisor at the Visiting Nurse Association of Rhode Island. "Rhode Island seniors can sometimes have a difficult time finding the resources they need, so I can't overstate how helpful it was that Congressman Cicilline brought constituents and all these organizations together in one place."

As a member of the Democratic Seniors Task Force, Cicilline has devoted significant time and energy towards serving Rhode Island seniors during his first term in Congress. Last month, he visited the Sal Mancini Senior Center with Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), who co-chairs the Task Force. In addition to speaking out against Republican proposals that would end the Medicare guarantee as we know it, Cicilline has also co-sponsored the Preserving Our Promise to Seniors Act, a bill that would strengthen the finances of the Social Security Trust Fund and improve how cost of living adjustments are calculated by using a new consumer price index.

"For many years, Congressman Cicilline has been a strong advocate for seniors and adults with disabilities," said Richard Kornacki, a Smithfield resident. "I appreciate his work, and I know he's going to continue standing up for seniors when he returns to Washington, D.C."
