From the Road: Gas Impact

Statement

Date: May 11, 2012

The environmental and aesthetic impact of oil and gas drilling to the commonwealth is best observed when traveling west on Route 6 through counties such as Bradford and Susquehanna.

The bucolic landscape is interrupted by machinery and well pads. The narrow roads are clogged with heavy machinery and tanker trucks. The lingering economic crisis and absence of sustaining jobs has caused an alliance between too many of our government representatives and the oil and gas industry.

As a result, Pennsylvania has become the most hospitable state for hydraulic fracturing. Pennsylvanians deserve more in the form of creative job development and alternatives to stimulate the economy and reduce the described codependence.

Meanwhile, we need to ramp up the quality, breadth and intensity of our monitoring activity.
