Ellmers Reflects on Memorial Day After Returning from Afghanistan

Congresswoman Renee Ellmers released the following statement from her office in Washington this afternoon:

"Last weekend I traveled to Afghanistan as part of a congressional delegation to survey the situation on the ground and meet with our troops in the war zone. I was impressed by the discipline and courage of our brave men and women in combat and thankful for the opportunity to visit our troops and meet with Afghan officials for briefings on the latest progress taking place. Above all, it gives me great joy to have had the privilege to meet with soldiers from Fort Bragg and convey to them our deepest appreciation for the work they are doing on behalf of freedom for our country."

"As we celebrate Memorial Day this weekend, we must take time to thank and remember the young men and women who came before us and fought for the same mission that our troops carry on today. We can never repay or even comprehend the sacrifices they have made and the lives lost in order to protect millions of their fellow citizens at home. Let us take the time to reflect on the families and loved ones they left behind who share in their honor."

This past weekend, Congresswoman Renee Ellmers travelled to Afghanistan as part of a congressional delegation to visit with American troops, Afghan officials, and civilians. The trip was organized by the United States Marine Corps to conduct oversight of U.S. operations in Afghanistan with a focus on the contributions, efforts, and concerns of women in the United States Armed Forces and local Afghan women. She was accompanied by fellow Congresswomen Martha Roby (R-AL), Susan Davis (D-CA), Donna Edwards (D-MD), and Kathy Hochul (D-NY).
