Congressman Charles W. Boustany, Jr., M.D. (R-South Louisiana), released the following statement after fellow House Ways & Means Subcommittee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX) held a Subcommittee on Trade hearing focused on three critical aspects of the Customs missions: modernization, streamlining and facilitation, and enforcement.

"Last week, I introduced the PROTECT Act (H.R. 5708), bipartisan legislation seeking to increase communication between agencies within the federal government and give them new tools to combat the evasion of import duties. I applaud the efforts of Chairman Brady in combating the evasion of import duties," said Boustany.

Boustany went on,"I welcome the testimony of John Williams, Executive Director of the Southern Shrimp Alliance, in highlighting the negative effects of duty evasion in South Louisiana. Customs enforcement is a serious issue impacting various businesses across South Louisiana on a daily basis."

Chairman Brady added, "I also want to congratulate fellow Ways & Means Committee member Dr. Charles Boustany on his bipartisan legislation to address evasion and underpayment of antidumping and countervailing duties, and I look forward to considering it."
