DelmarvaNow.com - Rep. Scott Rigell: Tangier Island Reflects Deep Connection to Chesapeake

Op-Ed

Date: May 24, 2012
Issues: Environment

By Representative Scott Rigell

With the number of deadrise workboats easily outnumbering the few cars on the Island, no Virginia community reflects a deeper connection to our Chesapeake Bay than Tangier Island. Its unique way of life is worth preserving.

A recent Associated Press story accurately captured the threat erosion poses to Tangier, but it did not include our ongoing efforts in support of the island.

Determined to meet Mayor James "Ooker" Eskridge's request for help, we are working closely with the Army Corps of Engineers, the Coast Guard, the Department of Environmental Quality, local wetlands boards, the Virginia Institute and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

Contrary to what the article implied, we are helping secure the permits needed to use barges to stop the erosion.

We are also facilitating discussions on other creative alternatives.

Though it is difficult and painfully slow to advance common-sense solutions when working with layers of federal and state agencies, each requiring full compliance with reams of regulations, we are undeterred.

Our fellow Virginians -- the hardworking watermen of Tangier Island and their families -- deserve -- and have -- our full support.
