Medicare and Social Security Trustees Release Bleak 2012 Report

Press Release

Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) released this statement on the 2012 Medicare and Social Security trustees reports, which show a bleak picture for the programs' future. Today's reports reaffirmed last year's report that said Medicare will be bankrupt by 2024, and also shortened Social Security's solvency by three years from last year's report, to 2033.

"Today's reports are another reminder that Medicare and Social Security are in trouble. These programs are a lifeline for our nation's seniors and most vulnerable. But if we sit back and do nothing, they won't be there for our children and grandchildren. Each year's annual report brings more troubling news, but Democrats in Congress are more willing to ignore the problem than work toward a solution. We need to get serious about strengthening Medicare and making sure these important programs are strong for future generations."
