Barrow Introduces H.R.4409, The Government Agency Reform Act, to Reduce Government Waste by Making Federal Agency Consolidation More Efficient

Today, Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) introduced H.R.4409, The Government Agency Reform Act of 2012, which would reduce government waste and duplication by making it easier to consolidate federal agencies. The Government Agency Reform Act would give the President the authority to submit a plan to Congress for improving the efficiency of government by consolidating agencies.

"The federal government wastes too much money through an antiquated bureaucracy," said Congressman Barrow. "My bill would save taxpayer dollars from being wasted, while improving the quality of services folks get from a smaller and more manageable federal government."

Until 1984 the President had the authority to submit a plan to Congress to reorganize the Executive Branch. In 1984, Congress did not reauthorize this power, and it has not been restored at any time since.

The Government Agency Reform Act of 2012 would restore the authority shared by the President and Congress for most of the 20th century to consolidate federal agencies in a timely and efficient manner.
