In answering President John F. Kennedy's bold call to put a man on the moon, America unleashed unprecedented technological advances that built the world's most vibrant economy. Since then, more than half of U.S. economic growth can be attributed to the development and adoption of new technologies. Today, the United States is in danger of losing its global leadership in science and technology. Rep. Eshoo fights daily to keep America #1.

In 2005, Norm Augustine and the National Academy of Sciences presented a report, entitled "Rising Above the Gathering Storm," which detailed this challenge and the steps necessary for the U.S. to meet them. In particular, the report called for enhanced basic research funding and a national commitment to math and science education. In response to the report, Rep. Eshoo was key to launching a series of meetings--beginning at Stanford University--with the high-technology, biotechnology, venture capital and academic communities. Together they developed a set of policy proposals, the Innovation Agenda, to strengthen American competitiveness.

The Innovation Agenda set forth the following objectives:

· Support a Sustained Commitment to Research and Development
· Create a New Generation of Innovators through Science, Math, and Engineering Education
· Provide Affordable Broadband Access for All Americans
· Move the U.S. toward Declaring Energy Independence
· Give Small Businesses Tools for Innovation
