Issue Position: Term Limits

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

This country is going off course because our elected representatives have created a situation where incumbents are re-elected more than 90% of the time. The system is geared towards helping them get re-elected, and thwarting the efforts of challengers to unseat them.

Term limits, for both the House and Senate, are the answer. Representing the people was not intended to be a career, like my opponent Emanuel Cleaver has made it. In fact, when our representatives had real jobs and owned businesses, they brought to the halls of Congress a variety of perspectives to draw from, and they also had to live "under" the rules or regulations they created. Not so anymore. Those who make regulations that govern business refuse to comply with them themselves.

That is why I propose a limit of six terms in the House, and two terms in the Senate, with a total combination of no more than 12 years in Congress.
