Today, Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott announced that a new analysis shows that thousands of people in the Third Congressional District of Virginia are already benefiting from the Affordable Care Act. The Affordable Care Act was signed into law two years ago and many of its most important provisions are already in effect. Congressman Scott, an ardent supporter of universal health care, held a community forum last Thursday in Richmond to discuss with constituents how the Affordable Care Act can benefit Virginia families and what can be expected in the next few years as health care reform continues to be implemented.

"Residents of my district -- ranging from young adults to senior citizens -- are all already receiving critical benefits from the new health care law," Rep. Scott stated.

A new analysis prepared by the Minority staff of the House Energy and Commerce Committee provides estimates by congressional district of the number of people benefiting from the new law. The analysis of the Third Congressional District of Virginia shows that the health care law has already allowed over 7,000 young adults to remain on their parent's policy and has provided $3.5 million worth of discounts for Medicare beneficiaries who fell into the Part D prescription "donut hole." In addition almost 500 small businesses have received a tax credit for the health coverage that they provide to their employees.

"I know that as key provisions of the health care law continue to be implemented, Americans will continue to see how they are personally benefiting from this landmark law," Rep. Scott added. "Although there are efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, we cannot move backwards. We cannot push seniors back into the 'donut hole' or kick young adults off their parents' policies. Health care reform is working to expand affordable coverage to all Americans, and I will continue to fight for its full implementation."
