Representative Larry Kissell (NC-08) recently met with officials from the North Carolina Assisted Living Association (NCALA) in Kissell's Washington office. The group met with Kissell to discuss concerns about proposed budget cuts that would affect seniors and those who rely on assistance, as well as efforts to ensure that those in need are protected.

"We owe it to our seniors and those who need assistance to make sure they receive the best care possible," Kissell said. "America's greatest generation sacrificed so much for our country. After working hard all their lives, many folks now find themselves struggling to keep up with the costs of long term health care. As we work to reign in government spending, we need to do everything we can to protect Social Security and Medicare, and make sure that folks are afforded the care they are owed and deserve."

Peggy Smith, NCALA Executive Director and Tonya Cloutier, RN, NCALA Board President discussed a proposal by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that would eliminate the adult care home option for low income seniors. They emphasized that the proposal has the potential to remove 11,000 elderly who are currently placed in adult care facilities.

"It was so wonderful to meet with Congressman Kissell and hear about his personal experience," said Smith. "It was evident that he is aware of our issue and is dedicated to protecting seniors."
