Issue Position: The Creeping Threat of Shariah (a.k.a. shari'a, sharia) Law

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

I will always defend our 1st Amendment right of the freedom to exercise religion. However, a few religions, especially those who engage in extreme interpretations such as Shariah Law, advocate the violation of the U.S. Constitution. For example, some Islamists interpret Shariah Law as calling for the execution of homosexuals and the mutilation or execution of women when their behavior does not strictly conform to Islamic teachings in the Quran and Sunnah. In over 50 cases heard by U.S. Courts, Shariah Law, in its less violent application, has already been applied in Judges' decisions. These recent events are similar to the process that occurred in the United Kingdom, where there are now more than 85 Shariah Courts sanctioned by the UK Government. We must NOT follow that path. Whether this growing threat should be stopped through legislation or a Constitutional Amendment, Congress should initiate the debate and I will be among the first to do so.
