Adams Votes for Accountability in Budgeting

Statement

Date: Feb. 3, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

Representative Sandy Adams (FL-24) released the following statement after supporting two pieces of legislation that would bring more accountability to the way Washington budgets. Yesterday the House passed H.R. 3582, the Pro-Growth Budgeting Act of 2011, legislation that would require the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) to provide lawmakers with a macroeconomic impact analysis for all major legislation. Today the House passed H.R. 3578, the Baseline Reform Act of 2011, which removes the pro-spending bias that currently exists in the baseline we use as a starting point in federal budgeting.

"Central Floridians have a right to know how their money is being spent. This is why I supported H.R. 3582, the Pro-Growth Budgeting Act of 2011, and H.R. 3578, the Baseline Reform Act of 2011, this week. Both pieces of legislation aim to bring more accountability to the way Washington budgets, while addressing our nation's broken budget process. H.R. 3582, the Pro-Growth Budgeting Act of 2011, requires the CBO to take into account real world economic factors in their forecasts so that lawmakers can see the true impact legislation would have on economic growth, job creation, and business investment. H.R. 3578, the Baseline Reform Act of 2011, would help put an end to dishonest budgeting, ensuring that Congress finally puts an end to the baseline games that have led to out-of-control spending and deficits. With our nation's debt over $15 trillion -- larger than our entire economy -- Congress owes it to the American people to budget in an honest, transparent and truthful manner."
