Rep. Sutton Rejects Congressional Pay Raise

Press Release

Date: Feb. 1, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

Working to address our nation's deficit in a bipartisan way, Congresswoman Betty Sutton (OH-13) voted today to freeze the pay of Members of Congress.

"Ohio families have been cutting back and sacrificing while our country recovers from one of the worst recessions in decades, and Members of Congress should do the same," said Sutton. "We should not allow the salaries of Members of Congress to continue to rise while salaries and jobs of working people, from teachers to laborers, hang in the balance in our state and across our country."

Sutton voted to pass H.R.3835, a bill introduced by Republican Sean Duffy of Wisconsin that extends a pay freeze for Members of Congress and federal employees through December 31, 2013.

A long time supporter of Congressional pay freezes in times of economic hardship, Sutton has voted four times to freeze or cut pay of Members of Congress since entering Congress in 2007 and was a co-sponsor of H.R.4255, the Stop the Automatic Pay Raise for Members of Congress in Fiscal Year 2011 Act.
