Dreier Reacts to President Obamas SOTU Address

Statement

Congressman David Dreier (R-CA), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, issued the following statement tonight in response to President Obama's State of the Union address:

"The State of the Union address always presents an opportunity to put forth areas of agreement. While there were some tonight, they were few and far between.

"With our economy still suffering, job growth and economic recovery must remain our top priority. To aid hiring and economic growth, House Republicans have put forward a plan for America's job creators. Unfortunately, the bulk of the nearly 30 House-passed jobs bills remain stuck in the Democratic-controlled Senate awaiting action. My hope is that President Obama will put action behind his words and work with us to enact these and other measures to assist Americans in getting back to work.

"In addition, while the President proposed changes to the tax code, something I support, I disagree with his approach. I believe we need to incentivize job creation through tax reform. This may be an area where we can work together.

"After last year's State of the Union address, I called on President Obama to send the pending free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama, and South Korea to Congress. When the White House eventually acted on these job creating agreements, Congress passed them in a swift bipartisan fashion. That action demonstrates our ability to work together to achieve positive results for the American people. We stand ready to do more. I hope the President and the Senate will work with the House to get the economy back on track." .
