Rep Burton: We Must Draw a Line in the Sand Regarding the Debt Limit

Statement

Date: Jan. 18, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN-05) issued the following statement after casting a vote in formal disapproval President Obama's $1.2 Trillion Debt Ceiling increase request:

"As our Nation continues to reel from the effects of a National debt that this past year eclipsed an unfathomable $15 Trillion dollars, the President, in his infinite wisdom, has decided to yet again move the goal posts and request another $1.2 Trillion dollars to throw down the gullet of the bloated bureaucracy that his Administration has created. The brazen audacity of this request is most clearly illustrated when one takes into account that this $1.2 Trillion dollars increase will join the failed Stimulus package, and a grotesquely expensive government takeover of healthcare, all amounting to a $4.6 Trillion dollar increase in our National Debt under his watch; The most drastic increase under any President....ever. And the Result? Our Nation's economy continues to stagnate."

"We must draw a line in the sand and let the President know that the American people will no longer allow him to bury our children and our children's children in debt. Blindly and irresponsibly spending money that we do not have is not a strategy, Mr. President, it is a problem. If Americans are forced to live within its means, so should Washington."
