Whitehouse Statement on Official End of U.S. Combat Mission in Iraq

Statement

Date: Dec. 15, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) released the following statement today after the United States military officially declared an end to its mission in Iraq.

"Today we thank the men and women of our armed forces for their brave service in Iraq, and we honor the memory of those from Rhode Island and across the nation who gave their lives in this conflict. As we welcome home our veterans and continue to support American servicemembers deployed in Afghanistan and elsewhere, I commend President Obama for standing by his pledge to bring this war to a close."

Since taking office in 2007, Whitehouse has been an opponent of the war in Iraq and a vocal advocate for bringing our troops home as quickly as possible.
