Readout of Secretary Napolitano's Visit to Qatar

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano today traveled to Doha, Qatar, to sign a bilateral aviation security agreement and meet with senior Qatari officials to discuss continued collaboration and increased security initiatives between the United States and Qatar.

Building on previous discussions, Secretary Napolitano and Minister of State for Interior Affairs Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani signed an aviation security agreement that will strengthen our ability to combat transnational crime and other threats through enhanced information sharing while facilitating travel and international commerce.

"This plan builds on the collaboration between the United States and Qatar to better protect both nations against threats to our common security," said Secretary Napolitano. "Today's agreement represents the next step in our partnership as we work together to facilitate legitimate trade and travel between our two nations."

Secretary Napolitano's visit to Qatar follows her trip to Paris, where she joined her counterparts at the G6+1 Ministerial Meeting and met with international security leaders to discuss the Department's efforts in combating transnational crime, securing cyberspace, and working to ensure a more safe, secure and resilient global supply chain. She also delivered remarks on the importance of strong international partnerships at the Institut des Hautes Études de Défense Nationale.

Secretary Napolitano will continue to the United Arab Emirates on Dec. 5-6, where she will join U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director John Morton and Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca at the Gulf States Global Police Symposium and deliver remarks on the Department's partnerships with the international law enforcement community.
