Congressman Steve Chabot Co-Sponsors Job Preserving Legislation

Rep. Chabot is an original co-sponsor of H.R. 3261, the Stop Online Piracy Act. The bill, introduced on October 26th, will update our criminal and civil statutes to modern standards to address new intellectual property theft issues on the Internet.

"This legislation will offer much needed protections to American innovators," Rep. Chabot said. "This bill will protect American jobs, which is critical when facing such a weak economy."

Existing laws offer no tools to guard against foreign websites trafficking counterfeit American goods and services. The Stop Online Piracy Act creates a four-tiered process to protect American intellectual property online. The process maintains the Attorney General's authority regarding domestic websites while expanding that authority to allow for injunctive relief to be sought against websites on foreign hosted domains. This bill further allows for rights holders to seek legal action against those profiting off the pirating of the property.

"Our legal system allows certain protections to individuals' intellectual property bought and sold in traditional markets," Rep. Chabot said. "It's time that our system be brought up to date and allow those same protections through the Internet."

H.R. 3261 is a bicameral, bipartisan effort to ensure job creators are protected from criminal actors engaged in billion dollar theft rings.
