Rahall Resolution Reminds World of America's Founding, "In God We Trust"

Statement

In recognition of America's heritage and the founding principle of religious freedom, U. S. Representative Nick Rahall (D -- W.Va.) Tuesday helped to pass a Congressional resolution he cosponsored to reaffirm "In God We Trust" as the Nation's motto and to promote and encourage its display in public buildings.

"As we approach Veterans Day, and with so many Americans serving in our military around the world, we are reminded of their service and sacrifice to protect and defend our rights here at home. Chief among those rights is our freedom to worship," said Rahall. "It is good for the soul of the country to pause and reflect upon God and His spirit upon which our Republic is founded. I hope this expression of the Congress will serve to remind friend and foe throughout the world that the principles on which our Nation was founded are as timeless as they are resolute. As President Kennedy said, "The world is very different now, and yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe -- the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of God.'"

Rahall is an original cosponsor of H. Con. Res. 13, a resolution reaffirming ""In God We Trust'' as the national motto of the United States, originally codified in 1956. It supports and encourages the public display of the national motto in all public buildings, public schools, and other government institutions.

The measure was passed by the House Tuesday evening by a vote of 396 to 9, and now moves to the Senate for consideration.
