Hastings on the Withdrawal of Troops in Iraq

Statement

Date: Oct. 21, 2011
Issues: Defense

Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-Miramar) made the following statement on President Obama's announcement regarding troop withdrawal in Iraq:

"I am relieved to hear that, after almost nine long years in Iraq, our troops are coming home. The decision to bring all American troops home from Iraq by the end of this year is the right thing to do. We have asked our servicemen and women, and their families, friends, neighbors, and communities, for too much sacrifice. After over 4,400 deaths, tens of thousands of injuries, and $1 trillion spent, it is past time to end our military commitment.

"The men and women of our nation's Armed Forces have admirably performed difficult work under extremely hard circumstances. They are to be commended for their dedication. They are owed our thanks. We must do everything we can to ease their transition back into society, to care for our veterans, and to ensure that our nation never forgets their sacrifices. I look forward to their return."
