NECN on Sunday

Statement

On Sunday, I will be appearing on NECN's DC Dialogue, a monthly show that examines issues in Congress and their associated impact on Massachusetts. I will be talking about how cuts made by the "Super Committee," which is charged with generating $1.5 trillion in deficit savings over the next ten years, might impact the Massachusetts defense industry and jobs. Many companies in Massachusetts, and in particular the Fifth District, have a strong track record of manufacturing the products and developing the technology that our servicemen and women rely on. Failure on the part of the Super Committee to reach consensus on $1.5 trillion in savings over the next decade would result in automatic and deep cuts to both discretionary and defense spending that would harm many essential programs, and possibly our national defense.

It has been known for quite some time that defense spending was going to decrease in the coming years, due to our pending withdrawals from Iraq and Afghanistan, and must decrease in order to help reduce our deficit. But these cuts must be carefully considered and be made with a scalpel as opposed to a meat cleaver. I hope that you can tune in for our discussion on Sunday morning at 10 AM.
