Markey Welcomes Social Security COLA Increase

Statement

Today, Congressman Edward J. Markey (D-Malden), dean of the Massachusetts Congressional delegation, released the following statement after the Social Security Administration announced that it will issue a Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) increase starting in January 2012. This is the first COLA in three years.

"Social Security is a lifeline for tens of millions of people across the country. In Massachusetts alone, there are 1.1 million Social Security beneficiaries and nearly 120,000 in the 7th Congressional District who rely on the program each month. Social Security is a pillar of our social contract with our citizens, and I applaud the Social Security Administration's announcement of this overdue increase.

"When it comes to our seniors, our children and our disabled, we have a great responsibility to offer Social Security benefits that provide for a healthy standard of living and the dignity that accompanies it.

"Protecting Social Security for future generations is fundamental and non-negotiable. I stand committed to fight for this promise for our seniors at every turn, and stand ready in Congress to combat Republican proposals to privatize this program."
