Schilling Pushes Long-Term Budget and Pro-Jobs Policies

Press Release

Expanding on his August letter emphasizing actions the House of Representatives has taken to address unemployment and job growth during the first seven months of the 112th Congress, Congressman Bobby Schilling (R-IL-17) joined a number of his colleagues in calling the Senate to action today, 888 days after the Senate last passed a budget.

"Over the last ten months, this Congress has made some progress, and has also met some frustration," Schilling said. "Most importantly, the House has fulfilled its responsibility by passing a budget. Unfortunately, we make up only one-half of one-third of the federal government. The House cannot negotiate with itself. The Senate, on the other hand, has failed to pass a budget in an unacceptable 888 days. Our enormous debt burden and the uncertainty brought about by their inability to pass a budget represents a serious threat to our job creators, our national security, and future generations.

"Americans are tired of short-term, stopgap measures and repeated showdowns over potential shutdowns. Business owners and our economy need the certainty that only a long-term budget can provide. With our unemployment at a historically high 9.1 percent and our debt quickly approaching a crushing $15 trillion, the time for action is now. I urge the Senate to get to work. Pass a budget right away. Pass these jobs bills right away. Americans across the country cannot afford to wait another day."

Schilling, who serves on the House Committee on Small Business and the House Armed Services Committee's Panel on Business Challenges within the Defense Industry, joined 36 other Republican Freshmen in Operation Turnaround, calling on the Senate to join House efforts to turn around our economy, reduce the nation's debt, remove burdensome government regulations, enact a balanced budget amendment, and get Americans back to work.
