Congressman Gingrey Continues Working Towards Deficit Reduction

Statement

Greetings,

It's been another busy week full of legislative business and committee activity here in Washington, and I'm pleased to be able to provide you the details in this week's newsletter.

On Tuesday, I was pleased to speak with Diane Rehm of National Public Radio (NPR) about President Obama's jobs proposal and the Medicare debate, among other topics. We had a great discussion about reforms to our tax system and you can read a transcript of the radio interview here.

I had the opportunity to chair a special briefing for the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) on Wednesday, where we discussed issues pertaining to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As a physician, I recognize that cancer research and life-saving therapies are of the utmost importance and I appreciated the opportunity to speak with healthcare professionals about these critical issues. You can view some photos from the event on my website here.

Later that evening, I attended the GOP Doctors Caucus Special Order with a focus on ObamaCare's effect on our deficit. I was able to clarify some of the promises and the realities of ObamaCare. Unfortunately, many regulations stemming from the new healthcare law will cause 100 million Americans to lose their employer coverage.

As you may have heard, the Committee on Energy and Commerce continued last week's hearing regarding Solyndra during a Friday questioning of company executives. Unfortunately, despite previous assurances from Solyndra executives that they would testify before the Subcommittee, CEO Brian Harrison and CFO W.G. Stover chose to invoke their Constitutional rights under the Fifth Amendment. The taxpayers deserve an explanation as to how they were swindled out of $535 million--and I encourage you to view the questions I asked Solyndra executives by clicking here. I will continue to provide you with additional updates on this subject throughout the coming months.

I look forward to updating you next week from Washington.
Sincerely,

Phil Gingrey, M.D.
