Reps. Burton and DeLauro Co-Sponsor Resolution Recognizing September as National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Statement

Date: Sept. 21, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN-05) and Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) introduced bi-partisan legislation yesterday to designate September of 2011 as National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

Rep. Burton stated that, "Ovarian Cancer is a devastating disease in which less than half of those survive five years after their initial diagnosis. By reaching across lines, Rep. DeLauro and I are working to bring more awareness to this devastating illness that affects one in every 69 women. All women are at risk for Ovarian Cancer but there is currently no reliable and easy-to-administer screening test used for the early detection. It is my hope that through this designation of September as National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month the spotlight will be squarely shown on this disease as early recognition of ovarian cancer symptoms are currently the best way to save women's lives.

Rep. DeLauro added "As a survivor of ovarian cancer, whose life was saved by early detection, I know how important it is to raise awareness about this terrible disease. I am very pleased to join with my colleague, Congressman Burton, today in this effort to recognize September as National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month," said Congresswoman DeLauro. "I was one of the lucky ones, but no one should have to rely on luck to survive. Women who catch their ovarian cancer at an earlier stage are three times more likely to survive the disease than those who do not. By designating this month as National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, we can help to raise awareness, educate women, and save lives."
