U.S. Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI) released the statement below in honor of Mexican Independence Day:

"Today we recognize the people of Mexico and those individuals of proud Mexican descent here in Rhode Island and across our country who are celebrating 201 years of Mexican independence for their tremendous cultural, civic, and economic contributions to our society and others across the world.

"On this day we remember the father of the Nation of Mexico, Miguel Hidalgo, and his cry for independence from Mexico's Spanish rulers in 1810. His bravery inspired José María Morelos, Agustín de Iturbide and the Mexican people to fight for their independence.

"Mexico's culture is diverse and vibrant, spanning ancient civilization and continues to thrive to this day. Mexico's rich history, ideals and values make our countries kindred spirits."
