Focusing Squarely on Job Creation

Statement

Date: Aug. 28, 2011

You may have heard last week about a business, who after nearly a century of doing business in Illinois, is moving their company across the border to Indiana, taking hundreds of jobs with them. The reason? The recent hike in the corporate income tax here in Illinois. The family owned Modern Drop Forge Company marks the 13th business from Illinois to relocate to Indiana over the past few years.

Raising taxes on job creators produces an economic catastrophe, hampering investments and placing far greater difficulty on nearly one in ten of our neighbors throughout Illinois who are struggling to find a job. Last month, Illinois lost more jobs than any other state in the nation and the unemployment rate rose to 9.5 percent in the state.

During my time at home, I've held numerous roundtables with business owners; all of which focused primarily on getting folks back to work. Job creators in the 11th District continue to cite economic uncertainty as their main concern. And why? Because taxes are too high, regulations are too burdensome, and the government won't stop spending money it doesn't have.

From the time I arrived in Washington, I have been committed to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in order to promote a pro-growth agenda; one that will refuel our economy. Over the last eight months, the House has passed several pieces of legislation to address the concerns we have been hearing from job creators. Unfortunately, most of these bills have been stuck in the Senate, awaiting action. Our nation can't afford to wait any longer - the time to act is now.
