Tierney Hosts Listening Sessions with Local Residents to Discuss Future of Medicare, Social Security and other Critical Programs

Press Release

Date: Aug. 31, 2011
Location: Danvers, MA

Congressman John Tierney today hosted the second in a series of listening sessions with local residents to discuss the future of Medicare and Social Security. In response to the ongoing debt and budget uncertainty, Congressman Tierney partnered with area councils on aging (COAs), health care advocates, and community groups, to meet with residents from around the district to answer their questions and hear their ideas about how Congress should move forward.

"Families in Beverly, Danvers, Newburyport and across our area are worried about paying their bills, educating their children, and caring for their aging parents," Congressman John Tierney said. "They are looking to Congress to find compromise and responsibly reduce spending, while protecting critical programs like Medicare and Social Security. Unfortunately, many are concerned that the current Majority seems unable to move past its ideological agenda and agree to common sense policies that would help put our country back on the right track. I am committed to continuing my conversations with local residents, through listening sessions, letters, emails, or Facebook, and taking their priorities back to Washington, DC."

During the events, which brought together residents who will soon begin to receive Medicare and Social Security, Congressman Tierney answered questions on a range of topics, including threats to Medicare and Social Security, how the Affordable Care Act is helping local families, and what needs to be done to deal with our country's debt while protecting key domestic programs like Medicare and education.

"Our communities must continue to join efforts to improve our local economy, protect our families and seniors, and ensure that critical programs like Medicare and education remain strong for future generations," said Karen Shwartz, Beverly resident. "I was encouraged by Congressman Tierney's words and appreciate his work on these issues."

"Potential cuts to Medicare, Social Security, education programs and veterans services put our families and seniors at risk," said Dr. Wayne Burton, President of North Shore Community College. "I thank Congressman Tierney for convening these listening sessions to answer our questions and hear our ideas. We need to work together to strengthen our community and prevent these attacks on our middle class."

On Monday, Congressman Tierney hosted the first listening session at the Newburyport YWCA. Today's event took place at North Shore Community College. In addition Congressman Tierney continues to visit local senior centers to discuss these issues, including Brooksby Village in Peabody and the Zabata Adult Day Care Center in Lynn earlier this week.
