Congressman Rothman's Statement on Cutbacks in Social Security Offices

Statement

Date: Aug. 22, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Steve Rothman (D-NJ) released the following statement on the announcement by the Social Security Administration that they will be cutting hours of their field offices throughout the country:

It was only a matter of time before the nearly one billion dollar reduction in funding to the Social Security Administration, pushed by Congressional Republicans, had an impact on our nation's seniors. These severe cuts are already having day-to-day consequences for seniors and unfortunately it looks like, under a Republican majority, more federal programs that protect this vulnerable community will remain on the chopping block.

Our seniors worked hard and earned their right to a solvent and fully funded Social Security system. As for our nation's debt problem, the country needs a balanced approach and shared sacrifice that includes ending unfair tax breaks and loopholes for big corporations and the wealthiest of Americans. America must continue to reduce our national debt, but such a reduction should not be placed on the backs of seniors.
